Plot

Though packaged for CBS by the successful production team of Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Ian Biederman, the weekly, hour-long legal drama Shark might never have seen the light of day had not celebrated stage and film actor James Woods agreed to sign on as star. Woods was cast as famous and famously arrogant and ruthless defense attorney Sebastian Shark, who literally stopped at nothing to clear his celebrity clients. When one such client ended up beating his wife to death after wriggling out of a domestic-abuse charge, the chastened Shark experienced an epiphany. The formerly flamboyant attorney humbly offered his services as a prosecutor in the office of his longtime enemy, LA district attorney Jessica Devlin (Jeri Ryan), who headed the High Profile Crime Unit. Even though Shark was now working on the side of the angels, he still tended to take an unorthodox (and sometimes underhanded) approach to his job. Others members of Jessica Devlin's team included wealthy, egotistical Casey Woodland (Samuel Page), energetic and eager-to-learn Madline Poe (Sarah Carter), streetwise intellectual Martin Allende (Alexis Cruz) and tough-talking newcomer Raina Troy (Sophina Brown). Also seen in the cast was Danielle Panabaker as Shark's estranged teenage daughter Julie. Shark is an American legal drama that originally ran on CBS from September 21, 2006 to May 20, 2008. Created by Ian Biederman, the series starred James Woods as Sebastian Stark, a notorious Los Angeles defense attorney who becomes a prosecutor.

History

The show first aired in the 10:00 p.m., Eastern Thursday night slot. On October 20, 2006, it was announced that CBS had picked up the show for a full 22-episode season.[1] CBS announced on May 16, 2007 that Shark would return for a second season.[2]

In Shark's second season, it moved to Sunday night at 10:00 p.m., switching timeslots with Without a Trace and thereby competing against another highly-rated series, ABC's Brothers & Sisters. In Canada, Global had also picked up Brothers & Sisters, so they decided to keep Shark on Thursday 10 p.m. timeslot, three days ahead of the CBS broadcast (except for the Season 2 premiere), and Brothers & Sisters for their Sunday night 10 p.m. timeslot.

The show returned Tuesday April 29, 2008 in a new timeslot at 9:00 to air the four remaining post-strike episodes.[3] CBS officially cancelled the series on May 13, 2008.[4]

In Australia Shark will start airing at 10pm on Thursdays from Nov. 12, 2009.

Characters

  • Sebastian Stark: A charismatic and cutthroat former high end defense attorney. Stark chose to become a public prosecutor after a client he had previously defended against assault charges killed his wife just a few days later. Despite his realisation after this case, his methods as a defense attorney have not been changed dramatically for his role as a prosecutor.
  • Jessica Devlin: Los Angeles District Attorney for 15 years, Devlin was Stark's boss for the duration of the season one. When she was defeated in an election, however, Stark hired her as the Senior Member of his team.
  • Madeline Poe: Poe was originally the only voluntary member of Stark's team. In season one, she began a relationship with Casey, who had later left the team by the start of season two, to run his father's political campaign.
  • Raina Troy: Troy is passionate, smart and tough, and described by Stark as "a contempt citation waiting to happen". She is in a relationship with Isaac Wright.
  • Danny Reyes: Reyes was transferred from the gang-crime unit, and used past experience to influence his motives. He often conflicts with Stark and Jessica, both of whom privately agree that he is a very good lawyer.
  • Isaac Wright: A former LAPD officer, Stark offered him a job on his team after Wright was forced to admit he planted evidence in an effort to prosecute his partner's killer.
  • Julie Stark: The daughter of Sebastian, she decided to stay with her father after her custody hearing, because "he needs her more than he'll ever know".

Visual in-references
