Life
Creech was born July 29, 1945, in South Euclid, Ohio. She has three brothers, Dennis, Doug, and Tom, and one sister, Sandy, upon whom she based the characters in Absolutely Normal Chaos and Ruby Holler. Her brother Tom currently resides in Kent, Ohio, with his wife, Marty, and their three children, Sandra, Mary, and Annie. Annie was the basis of a character in Heartbeat. Every year, Creech's family visited Quincy, Kentucky, the inspiration for the town of Bybanks, which appeared in Chasing Redbird, Bloomability, Walk Two Moons, and (by reference) The Wanderer. Her grandmother plays a part in Granny Torrelli Makes Soup. She received a BA from Hiram College and a MA from George Mason University.
In 1979, she moved to Surrey, England. In addition to being a writer, Creech has taught English and writing at a high school and a boarding school, The American School in Switzerland (TASIS). She drew the setting of Bloomability from her experiences in Switzerland. She is married to Lyle Rigg, who was the headmaster of The Pennington School in Pennington, New Jersey, with whom she has two children, Rob and Karin.
