Shawfield riots

Shawfield riots, 1725. After the Union of 1707 taxation policy remained a delicate matter in Scotland. The imposition of the malt tax on Scotland by exasperated Tories in 1712 provoked a determined attempt at repeal of the Union and it was not levied. In 1724 a move to raise revenue by 3 pence on every bushel of malt provoked severe riots in Glasgow. Shawfield, the home of Daniel Campbell, MP for Glasgow Burghs, was plundered.
