Album Review: Shehnai Nawaz

Review

The classical Indian shenai master, with a tone like a mockingbird trying to attract attention in a cave, is featured here on three relatively compact ragas. It is a release of the Indian HMV branch from the very early '90s and, like many of its ilk, seems aimed at the hardcore classical Indian audience who has little need for a lot of information about the pieces. Most listeners would probably care about who the master's sidemen are, so it is indeed an oversight leaving their identity a total mystery. Khan plays with fantastic aplomb here and scores with every single note. He is a such a deep musician, with so much to say, that the beginning of one of his recordings is like the first sight (and whiff) of a fine Thali dinner being delivered. Dig right in! ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
