Main Characters

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is a yellow sea sponge who lives with his pet snail, Gary, in a fully furnished, one bedroom pineapple in the town of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob's dream in life is to be the ocean's ultimate fry cook, and thanks to his job flipping Krabby Patties at the Krusty Krab, he lives to that dream every day. SpongeBob is as optimistic and earnest as a sea-dwelling sponge gets, but he can't seem to avoid getting himself, and usually everyone else around him, into trouble. While trying too hard, he tends to do things wrong - really wrong - which usually spells “disaster”. However, SpongeBob's always looking on the bright side of life; his enthusiasm and curiosity about the world make him downright irresistible or completely annoying. SpongeBob’s hobbies include blowing bubbles, catching (and releasing) jellyfish with his best friend, Patrick Star, practicing karate, and making "Krabby Patties" down at the "Krusty Krab". Spongebob has also never went to his own high school prom because of being so weird to his fellow school/girl classmates. Spongebob also has a degree in fry cooking and has a paycheck of $20 an hour. [1]

Patrick Star

Patrick Ford Star is a sea star who is SpongeBob’s best friend and neighbor. He lives under a rock and favors colorful trunks (mainly green and violet) as his attire. Patrick is not the brightest sea star in the ocean, though he did attend community college, though what he studied is never revealed. His attention span has been clocked at .02 seconds. His favorite activities include sleeping, catching jellyfish, napping, blowing bubbles ,and eating ice cream. He worked at the Krusty Krab doing odd jobs until he won an award (which is the only reason he took the job). As SpongeBob's closest friend, Patrick is always offering his advice and encouragement as they embark on various adventures, which usually get them both in trouble. Patrick has been known to have gone to community college and he had also studied at a medical school for twelve years, which could put his actual intelligence at question. He is most likely in his 20's. His true age is never completely revealed. Patrick's first house was a downtown Bikini Bottom Multi apartment where he lived After community college for 1 month until the residents decided that it was time to leave because he hid dirty carmol apples in the residents toliet's. after he left he found a rock house for free and decided to move in. patrick was the second person after Squird living on that street. [2]

Squidward Tentacles

Squidward Tentacles is bald with light green skin, a large nose, and lives in a Moai (also known as an Easter Island Head) located between SpongeBob's and Patrick's residences. He also has a female snail named Snelly who only appears in one episode. He works as a cashier at the Krusty Krab, a job which he despises. SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick consider Squidward their friend, but the feeling is not (generally) mutual. Squidward tends to be a downer, and is often pulled into embarrassing and awkward situations by Spongebob and Patrick. He does not like SpongeBob and Patrick because they annoy him and he thinks he is more mature than them. However, he does show concern for them in some episodes. For example, when he thinks that Spongebob has eaten a bomb disguised as a pie, Squidward thinks he will never see him again and feels extremely guilty. [3] Squidward's hobby is playing the clarinet, though he is only sometimes good at it, listening to jazz, suntanning, making sculptures, and painting. His main rival is Squilliam Fancyson, his former band classmate and the richest squid in Bikini Bottom. it is not reveled if squidward ever went to high school or college.

The series animators illustrated Squidward with six tentacles, believing that giving him the proper number for an octopus (eight) made him look too burdened. This is revealed in the pop-up commentary of the "Krusty Krab Training Video" on the Season 3 DVD.

Sandy Cheeks

Sandra Cheeks is a squirrel who is SpongeBob's closest friend after Patrick. She has many air breathing pets like a caterpillar named "Wormy" (who turns into a butterfly) a snake, bird, and cricket. She is the series' only land-based character (originally from Texas, which she is very protective of), but lives in a large underwater home known as the "Treedome", which contains a large oxygen producing oak tree and is sponsored by three primate scientists who provide her with grants so she can invent mechanical devices and conduct research. She is a scientific genius, practices karate with SpongeBob, and enjoys extreme sports.[4] The only reason she taught SpongeBob karate was so she could have a punching bag, and that as was revealed in "King of Karate", when Sandy said she taught him everything he knows, she then said that wasn't much.

Eugene H. Krabs

Eugene Harold Krabs is the owner and founder of the Krusty Krab.[5] He is a red crab, though his daughter, Pearl, is a whale and they both live in an anchor. He is protective of Pearl, sometimes. Other times he puts his cheapness before her. He is the employer of both SpongeBob and Squidward. Despite his love of money, he is often respected by SpongeBob while Squidward tends to loathe him. Mr. Krabs also claims to love Mrs. Puff, SpongeBob's driving school teacher but the relationship is not mentioned again. He has been to court twice after being sued by Plankton for not having a caution sign indicating wet floor (while Plankton is falsifying injuries), and food poisoning. Mr. Krabs will also do anything for a penny, such as rob a grave, and even sell the Krusty Krab. Most of the time he is described as cheap. He has a bad back due to sleeping on his mattress at home that has all of his money in it although he sometimes is shown sleeping in a hammock. A running gag through the series is that his legs and arms frequently break off.

Sheldon J. Plankton

Sheldon Plankton is a small green copepod who is Mr. Krabs's enemy and the main antagonist of the series. He runs an unsuccessful restaurant called the Chum Bucket, located directly across the street from the Krusty Krab.[6] He is married to a computer named Karen, and nearly became Mr. Krabs' stepfather in the episode "Enemy-In-Law." Also, his main goal in life is to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula and put Mr. Krabs out of business.[7] Plankton succeeds at stealing the formula in the movie, but his goal of world domination is thwarted by SpongeBob. He only had one customer at his restaurant in "Plankton's Regular" , but it turned out that Karen was paying the man to pretend to like Plankton's chum. He and Mr. Krabs may be enemies, but they have proven to show that they are also close friends.[8]

Gary

Gary the Snailfish is SpongeBob's pet sea snail. As worms are analogous to dogs in the series, snails are to cats, and Gary vocalizes like one. [9] He is extremely intelligent and does various chores for SpongeBob, such as making his breakfast and paying the electric bill. Once, Spongebob believed Gary favored Patrick over him, although Gary was just after the cookie in Patrick's pocket. He is occasionally shown as arthropomorphic, such as cooking, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, etc. He is shown to be a good leader, as demonstrated in an episode where he incites a riot at a pet show where all the animals were forced to wear demeaning outfits. He falls in love with Snelly, Squidward's snail for an episode.

Recurring characters

Mrs. Poppy Puff (Mary Jo Catlett) - A white-spotted puffer with blonde hair and green fins who is the owner and teacher of a boating school (analogous to a driving school). She dreads teaching SpongeBob due to his reckless boating. In the Season 3 episode "Krusty Love", it is revealed that she was married at one time, but her husband is now a lamp, and she does not like to talk about it. She is frequently seen inflating like a balloon in episodes. She has had a pet snail since she was a little girl. It is possible that Mrs. Puff is not her real name, for in "No Free Rides," she states "no, not again" to the idea of changing her name and starting a new boating school, implying that is has happened before.

Mermaid Man (Ernest Borgnine) and Barnacle Boy (Tim Conway)[10] - Two aged superheroes that live in a retirement home, Shady Shoals whom SpongeBob and Patrick watch on television. Mermaid Man's catchphrase is "EVIL!", and the characters are the only animated humans in SpongeBob SquarePants. In one episode Mermaid Man Calls Barnacle Boy "Kyle" But since he's an elderly he might have gotten him confused with someone else. They seem to be based on Aquaman and Aqualad.

Pearl Krabs (Lori Alan) - Mr. Krabs' 16-year-old whale daughter, who is fairly popular but is sometimes teased about her father's cheapness. In one episode Pearl takes over the Krusty Krab and renames it the Kuddly Krab and only serves salad and tea. In early episodes she seemed sensitive and cried often, however in recent episodes she has been rude, mean, and sarcastic as seen in the episode Selling Out where Mr. Krabs sells the Krusty Krab and retires.

Larry the Lobster (Doug Lawrence) - The crustacean lifeguard of Goo Lagoon, Larry is a bodybuilder and workout fanatic. In one episode Larry thought that Spongebob was a lifeguard, but Spongebob cannot swim. In another episode, he enters Goon Lagoon on a motorcycle, telling Spongebob and Patrick that they should "live everyday as if is was their last". He thinks that Sandy likes him, but she does not.

The Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) - A pirate ghost named after the famous ghost ship the The Flying Dutchman. He lives underwater in a giant ship, and collects souls in a knapsack.

Karen (Jill Talley) - Sheldon Plankton's computer W.I.F.E. (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph) who often expresses human emotions. She helps Plankton in his schemes to steal the Krabby Patty formula. She has a thick Minnesota accent.

French Narrator (Tom Kenny) - Introduces some of some episodes in a French accent. He is seen as a scuba diver with a TV camera, and was once hit by SpongeBob when driving a boat with Mrs. Puff. On the November 16, 2004 episode of the NPR program Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Kenny admitted that Jacques Cousteau was the inspiration for the French narrator, as series creator ,Stephen Hillenburg, considered him an idol.

Patchy the Pirate (Tom Kenny) – A live-action character who is the president of the SpongeBob fan club and lives in Encino. He hosts SpongeBob specials and related major events.

Potty the Parrot (Stephen Hillenburg and Paul Tibbitt) - Potty is a character that appears in the live actions segments of special events. It is a crudely made puppet, controlled by very obvious strings. Potty is Patchy the Pirate's mischievous pet parrot who enjoys playing practical jokes on Patchy. He usually gets killed in an entertaining way.

Harold SquarePants (Tom Kenny) and Claire SquarePants (Sirena Irwin) - SpongeBob's parents, who more resemble sea sponges rather than SpongeBob's shape as a kitchen sponge.

Squilliam Fancyson (Dee Bradley Baker) - Squidward's successful and snooty rival from high school who owns a band and is well-known for the luxuries he possesses.

Harold (Dee Bradley Baker)- a blue fish with a white shirt and a red swimsuit. He has a shark like fin. He enjoys eating at the Krusty Krab.

Minor characters

Mrs. Krabs (Paul Tibbitt) (Sailor Mouth and Mid-Life Crustacean) (Sirena Irwin) (All other appearances) - Mr. Krabs's mother.

Bubble Bass (Dee Bradley Baker) - A bass who was SpongeBob's arch-nemesis during the first season. Bubble Bass is obese, rude, and a picky eater. He is first named in the episode "pickles" , in which he is the main antagonist, although he appeared as a background character in earlier episodes. He briefly caused Spongebob to go into a deep depression after telling everyone at the Krusty Krab that he didn't put pickles on his Krabby Patty.

Flatts (Thomas F. Wilson) - A green diamond-shaped flounder who went to community college with Patrick and bullied SpongeBob at Mrs. Puff's boating school. He made cameos in the episodes "Sandy's Rocket", "Texas" and "The Bully".

Grandma SquarePants (Marion Ross) - SpongeBob's grandmother. Her first name is unknown. She treats him like a kid, kissing him goodbye on the cheek, feeding him cookies, and telling him childrens' stories. This makes him the laughing stock of the customers at the Krusty Krab in the episode "Grandma's Kisses".

Man Ray (John Rhys-Davies/Bob Joles) and The Dirty Bubble (Charles Nelson Reilly) - Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's main enemies. Man Ray has a humanoid body with a special mask and helmet, while The Dirty Bubble is capable of encasing enemies inside his body. Charles Nelson Reilly is the primary actor for The Dirty Bubble, but Tom Kenny has portrayed the character in one episode after Reilly's death in 2007.

Old Man Jenkins (Doug Lawrence and Tom Kenny) - An elderly fish who used to live in the Krusty Krab retirement home before it became the Krusty Krab restaurant, and currently resides at Shady Shoals. His appearance changes through some episodes. In the episode where Mr. Krabs and Plankton talked about when they were friends, they said that they asked Old Man Jenkins to try their burger (sooner became the Kraby Patty) but the burger was so terrible, he passed away, but appeared in a couple more episodes. Voiced by Doug Lawrence and Tom Kenny in separate episodes.

Painty the Pirate (Patrick Pinney) - A painting of a pirate head who sings the SpongeBob SquarePants theme.

Scooter (Carlos Alazraqui (most episodes)/Clancy Brown (Wigstruck)) - A lavender-colored fish who enjoys surfing. He died in the second-season episode Bubble Buddy, but returned in future episodes. He talks like a stereotypical surfer dude and spends most of his time at the Goo Lagoon.

King Neptune (Paul Tibbitt/John O'Hurley) - The king of the ocean and Atlantis, King Neptune is a massive magical blue merman with red glowing hair. Another Neptune appears as one of the movie's one-time characters, who is a massive green merman with a gingerbread and a bald head, a daughter named Mindy, and is voiced by Jeffrey Tambor.
