Biography

Sherry Snow was one-half of Blackburn & Snow, a male-female folk-rock duo who were one of the most unjustly overlooked San Francisco rock acts of the '60s. Snow's roots in the California folk scene that gave birth to the leading edge of the state's folk-rockers were considerable. As a student at San Jose State, she met and sometimes played with Paul Kantner, David Freiberg, Jorma Kaukonen, and Pigpen of the Grateful Dead. For a time, she lived with Kantner, Freiberg, and David Crosby in the same house in Venice, CA, when all were struggling folkies. In the San Jose coffee house scene, she met Jeff Blackburn and the two began a musical and romantic partnership.

Although Snow and Blackburn recorded some fine full-band folk-rock for Frank Werber's Trident Productions in 1966-1967, only four tracks were released (see the Blackburn & Snow entry for details). Fortunately, those tracks and many more that they did during the era were issued in 1999 on the fine 20-song CD Something for Your Head. Snow then joined Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, and sang on his first album, 1969's Original Recordings. Snow then left the music business. In the early 21st century, now going by the name Halimah Collingwood, she was working as a media coordinator for the Mainstream Media Project, and hosting a world music program on an Arcata, CA, radio station. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
