Shieldon (タテトプス Tatetopusu?, Tatetops in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Shieldon is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Shieldon in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

The name Shieldon is a portmanteau of the words shield and don, a word meaning tooth commonly used in the names of dinosaurs. The Japanese name Tatetops derives from the Japanese word for shield ( tate?) and the "-ceratops" suffix used to describe prehistoric horned dinosaurs such as the famous Triceratops.

Biological characteristics

Shieldon is a prehistoric Pokémon, similar to Omanyte, Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Anorith, Lileep, and Cranidos. It resembles a ceratopsian, a family of dinosaurs including Triceratops. It is rather small with a large, protective shield covering its hidden face, very similar to Aron. Shieldon has short legs and glaring eyes.

In the video games

Shieldon made its first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It can be revived from its remains, an Armor Fossil, which can only be found in Pokémon Pearl, at the Oreburgh City Mining Museum. The Armor Fossil is obtained in a mini-game in the Sinnoh Underground.

In the Pokémon anime

Shieldon makes another appearance in the D/P episode "Hunter J again! Protect the stray Shieldon!". A rumor that Ash had captured Shieldon had spread around the time the episode aired, but was quickly squashed.
