2. The son of Gera, a Benjamite of the house of King Saul, who dwelt at Bahurim (II Sam 16:5). Nevertheless, David ordered his heir Solomon to punish Shimei (I Kgs 2:8-9). Solomon accordingly ordered Shimei to take up residence in Jerusalem, forbidding him on pain of death to leave the city (I Kgs 2:36-38). Three years later, Shimei nevertheless journeyed to Gath to bring back two of his runaway slaves; on his return Solomon had him killed (I Kgs 2:39-46).

Shimei is the name of a number of persons referenced in the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinical literature.

  • The second son of Gershon and grandson of Levi (Ex. vi. 17; Numbers 3:18; I Chronicles 6:17). The family of the Shimeites, as a branch of the tribe of Levi, is mentioned in Numbers 3:18, 21; I Chronicles 23:7, 10, 11 ("Shimei" in verse 9 is evidently a scribal error); and in Zechariah 12:13.
