Game Description

In the spirit of Microsoft's Flight Simulator series or Auran's Trainz releases, Ship Simulator 2006 is serious software designed to model watercraft in action, accurately and authentically. Players can choose from nine basic models of ship, including speedboats, yachts, and even ocean liners, and the game offers three navigable virtual environments, set in busy Rotterdam Harbor (Netherlands), upstream Hamburg Harbor (Germany), and the tropical islands of Phi Phi (Thailand). There are 37 pre-designed missions, to help virtual skippers get their feet wet, but an included scenario editor lets players design their own challenges and share them with others online.

Ship Simulator Extremes is the working title of the next instalment in the Ship Simulator series slated for release in Q1 2010.[8] It will be released by Paradox Interactive.

Additions to the game include new locations (including Antarctica and Bora Bora) as well as new ships (including official licensed Greenpeace vessels) and new dynamic weather and water systems. Following a campaign by members of their growing fanbase, Vstep agreed to include the ports of Dover and Calais (in one environment).[9]

Peripherals

A "ship control unit", designed specifically for Ship Simulator and enabling more realistic steering, was released in 2006 by Wilco Publishing.[10] P.I. Engineering have announced ShipDriver a marine simulation controller based on their RailDriver product for release in early 2009.[11]

Critical reception

Ship Simulator has been criticised for limitations in the replication of realistic controls and the lack of open architecture preventing users from creating their own vehicles and voyages.[12] "Slow and mundane gameplay"[13] and bugs have also been cited.[14] Reviewers did comment that the game is challenging[15] and that it has educational value.[16]
