Based on the novel Haakon Haakonsen, Shipwrecked is a family film about a cabin boy (Stian Smestad) whose ship is hit by a hurricane just before it is about to be ambushed by pirates. The boy and his stowaway friend wash up on a South Seas island which happens to be where the pirates' treasure is buried. Soon, the pirates--led by Lieutenant Merrick (Gabriel Byrne)--arrive at the island with hopes of reclaiming their treasure, and the boy decides to construct a series of elaborate booby traps to prevent them from reaching the booty. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

The movie was produced by a consortium of Scandinavian companies and released in the U.S. in a dubbedEnglish-language version by Walt Disney Pictures. Shot on location in Fiji, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom, the movie is a dramatization of Norwegian author O.V. Falck-Ytter's book Haakon Haakonsen: En Norsk Robinson (Haakon Haakonsen: A Norwegian Robinson). This adventure story aimed at young readers was inspired by Daniel Defoe'sRobinson Crusoe and published in 1873. The film has received favorable reviews as a well-made adventure story for families.
Haakon Haakonsen, a young Norwegian boy in the 1850s, becomes the sole support of his family as a cabin boy on a ship after his father is injured. Jens, a family friend and a fellow shipmate of Haakon’s father, becomes an older brother to Haakon on their voyage. At first, Haakon has a difficult time adjusting to life at sea, but eventually earns the respect of his shipmates. He even discovers a female stowaway who turns into a romantic interest. After the mysterious death of his admired captain, a new set of suspicious shipmates comes on board, along with a new captain. Soon afterwards, Haakon survives the sinking of his ship in a terrible storm and wakes up on a deserted tropicalisland. After searching the island, Haakon discovers that his suspicious shipmates are pirates. Haakon eventually finds his friends Jens and Mary (the stowaway) and realizes that the pirates are returning to the island. Haakon attempts to find a plan to save himself and his friends and return home safely.
Goof and Mistakes
When Haakon drops a crate with explosives in it onto a bonfire, it blows up before it reaches the bonfire.
When Haakon washed ashore, he's barefoot or nearly so. When he falls into the pit, he has just part of a shoe on his right foot. Then, as he builds the boobytraps, he has parts of shoes on both feet. He sees the flare from the other island, builds a boat and launches it barefoot - then wades out of the water on the other island wearing two completely intact shoes.
