Biography

The blonde "vamp" or "Little Rich Girl" of such Our Gang shorts as Helping Grandma (1931) or Bargain Day, Shirley Jean Rickert had won a beautiful baby contest in her native Seattle before making her screen debut opposite comedian Monte Collins in How's My Baby (1930). She followed her stint with the Gang with appearances opposite Mickey McGuire (later Mickey Rooney) and in subsequent years worked as a dancer/chorus girl in numerous MGM musicals, from Best Foot Forward (1943) to Singin' in the Rain (1952). When film musicals went out of fashion, Rickert toured America as a burlesque dancer or, as she herself acknowledges, "a striptease." ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Shirley Jean Rickert (March 25, 1926 – February 6, 2009) was an American child actress who was briefly the "blonde girl" for the Our Gang series in 1931, during the Hal Roach talkie period.

Rickert's most notable appearances were in the films Love Business and Bargain Day, in which her split-curls were the centerpiece of her precocious performance. After Rickert left the Our Gang series, she had a brief movie career, followed by a string of jobs including driving trucks for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. She later worked in burlesque until 1959.[citation needed]

In the mid-1970s, she became a traveling saleswoman for industrial hardware. Late in life, she performed in local theater productions, helped maintain a Web site for her fans and occasionally appeared at film festivals and conventions. She also sold her crafts at a local shop with her daughter's family.[citation needed]
