Shooting Star compresses the bombastic side-long suites of Kansas into accessible singles smattered with unique pop passion. Combining the first two Shooting Star records means a bundle of Midwestern bang for one's buck here: Hang on for Your Life streamlines the Kansas City sextet into FM rockers, exemplified by the dust-kicking title track and the breakneck "Breakout." Two more fine songs, "Just Friends" and "Flesh and Blood," expose the tenderness behind the muscle.
