"Shout" is a popular and influential popular song, originally recorded by The Isley Brothers. Released in 1959, it was written by the brothers themselves as a call-and-response answer to Jackie Wilson's seminal "Lonely Teardrops" which they interpreted after performing that song during a club date.

While "Shout!" didn't reach higher than #47 on the Billboard Hot 100, it became their first gold single on the basis of its longevity and became a much-covered tune for them, with many U.S. and international artists recording the song. The song was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. It ranked #118 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

Covers

• Only a few months after The Isleys' original version came out, "Shout!" became the first major hit for pioneering Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe, reaching #3 on the local charts in November 1959.
• The Motown legends The Temptations performed the song on many occasions in the early 60's.
• It was also a hit for US band Joey Dee and the Starliters in 1962.
• The song was covered by The Shangri-Las on their first album in 1964.
• The Scottish singer Lulu covered part 1 of the song for her first single release in 1964 when she was only 15 years old. When it was released in the spring of 1964, it became a smash hit and launched Lulu on the road to stardom. "Shout" went on to take the British Singles Chart by storm and finally reached No. 7.
• The Beatles also featured part 2 of the song in their stage act, and an appearance on Ready Steady Go! in 1964. The version that was recorded for the Ready Steady Go! program was released on The Beatles Anthology 1 in 1995. Interestingly, it appears to be one of the few songs where all four Beatles share the lead vocals.
• The song was covered by the US band Question Mark and the Mysterians on their 2nd album, in 1967.
• The song was as well covered by The Trammps in 1974 (Philadelphia International Records).
• The song achieved additional popularity in the cover version performed by the fictional band Otis Day and the Knights in the 1978 movie Animal House. Though Day's voice was dubbed, both the musical and visual performances were unforgettable, and a record release also became a hit.
• The song was covered by the UK band Shillelagh Sisters on the B-side of their 2nd 12" single "Passion Fruit", in 1984.
• "Shout!" was also recorded by Whoopi Goldberg and included on the soundtrack of the movie Sister Act (1992).
• Ska punk band Save Ferris incorporated part of "Shout!" into their song, "I Know", performed on the ball scene from the film "10 things I hate about you".
• The song was performed by Girls Aloud member Nicola Roberts during Popstars: The Rivals.
• The song has become a popular live-cover song for Green Day, which they perform exclusively at gigs. The transition to the song is often made during the breakdown section of "King For A Day", a Green Day original song that shares many similarities with "Shout". One such mix was performed during their entire 2005 American Idiot tour and featured on their live CD/DVD Bullet in a Bible.
• The band Bon Jovi also performs a segment of the song "Shout" at their live shows incorporated with their own song "Bad Medicine", usually performed towards the end of their main set, before the encore.
• The song was covered by Shabnam Paryani, an ex-housemate from the UK television show Big Brother 2007 in October 2007.
• Tom Petty covered this song (part 1) in his first live album Pack up the Plantation: Live!, and played the song (mostly part 1, sometimes both parts as a medley) frequently between the years 1976 and 1983.
• A live-cover of the song was released by Billy Joel on his album My Lives.
• Was covered by Joan Jett on the album Bad Reputation.
• MXPX covered "Shout" and made a video for the song that is included on the 2003 DVD re-release of Animal House.
• Panic At The Disco end their show on the Rock Band Live Tour with this song.
• Alvin and the Chipmunks had covered a slightly revised version of "Shout!" for their album Club Chipmunk: The Dance Mixes mostly sung by Simon Seville.
• Video footage of an early '60s performance of "Shout" by The Who is included in their film The Kids are Alright, but not included in the soundtrack album.
• An outtake from the Invincible album by Michael Jackson named "Shout" contained an interpolation of the song in the chorus.
• M.O.D. covered "Shout" on their EP Surfin' M.O.D. released in 1988

• The song would go on to be the theme song in commercials for the Shout brand of detergent.
• It was also used as a song in Australian children's program Play School.
• It was the basis for the ABC TV network jingles for 1989 and 1990 seasons.
• A version of "Shout" is also played at the home games of the Buffalo Bills football team each time the Bills score, using the traditional "Let's Go Buffalo". This same version is also sometimes played at University at Buffalo football home games.
• The song is also featured during many college football games. Shout! is played at the end of the third quarter at the home games of the Purdue Boilermakers.
• The song was featured in the film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
• The song was performed by the fictional band "Otis Day & The Knights" during the memorable toga party scene in the 1978 film Animal House.
• More recently, the original version was remixed by Matter Music for a memorable sequence in the 2005 film Wedding Crashers.
• The song was featured in the YouTube video sequel to "Evolution of Dance".
• An A Capella version was sung on the CMT original movie Beer for My Horses.
• A fragment of a male-vocal version of "Shout" accompanies the closing captions in Mars University, episode eleven of the first production season of Futurama.
