shrink-wrap

A protective wrapping for articles of merchandise consisting of a clear plastic film that is wound about the articles and then shrunk by heat to form a sealed, tight-fitting package. Also called shrink package.

Clear, plastic protective covering used on product packages that can be shrunk by heat to fit tightly around the package. Large-volume shrink-wrap operations use a conveyor belt system. The shrink wrap is placed loosely around each shipment and is carried on the belt into an oven for shrinking. See also bubble wrap.

The clear plastic coating that covers the boxes in which commercial software is sold. The integrity of the shrinkwrap is viewed as a guarantee that the software is genuine and has not been tampered with, but many retail outlets have the ability to rewrap returned software that may already have been installed and possibly tainted.
