Shulchan Aruch

Welcome! The Shulchan Aruch is the most influential code of Jewish Law as practiced today. This Wikisource text project contains the Hebrew text interwoven with an English translation.

Introduction

The Shulchan Aruch has never been translated into English in its entirety, though parts of it have (especially Orach Chaim). None of the partial translation are free to use (i.e. free content or in the public domain).

The Hebrew text is online here. The goal of this Wikisource text project is to copy that Hebrew text here (it is in the public domain), and add English translations, section by section, as people look up and learn the various simanim.

Important: Wikisource is moving to language domains in June. Some formatting suggestions (NOTE CHANGE FROM BEFORE):

• In order to format the Hebrew and English next to each other, please use the following tags:
  • Begin the page with:
    {|border=0 valign=top align=center rules=cols cellpadding=5
  • End the page with:

  • English text for each seif should go before the corresponding Hebrew text.
  • Before the English text, use

  • Before the Hebrew text, use:

  • Surround Siman headings and Seif numbers with triple quotes ('''text''').
    • Why not make each Seif a section (==text==? Nahum 23:57, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • I orignially did, but with the table formatting, it comes out looking terrible. Ben
• If your browser gives you trouble cutting and pasting the Hebrew, then just enter the translation, and someone else will help out with the Hebrew. Alternatively, if you've got some spare time, just pasting in the Hebrew will be helpful, and allow someone else to come along and translate.
• Update the main page (links below) with the title of the Siman. Eventually, we should add section titles as well.
• The Rama's glosses should be in italics.
  • What about in Hebrew? Italics don't work well in Hebrew and are not well-accepted. Perhaps it would be better to separate them with ":" below the statements they refer to. This would also make the siman easier to read.
    • I would like it to be "in-line" just like in a printed text. The chabad site uses smaller text, but I find it hard to distinguish. Printed texts use a different font, i.e., Rashi, but I'm not sure what is available on people's machines.
• It is OK to assume a basic familiarity with halacha, in order to facilitate easy reading (e.g., Tachanun instead of Supplication Prayers).
