Shwebo
- Location: Burma
- Variant names:
Moksobomyo, Shwebomyo
The original name meant 'Town of the Hunter Chief' from
mokso 'hunter',
bom 'chief', and
myo 'town'. In
c.1753 the longer form of the present name was adopted and it meant 'Town of the Golden Chief' from
shwe 'golden' and
myo. This was a reference to King Alaungpaya (1714–60), King of Burma (1752–60), whose birthplace this was and whose tomb is here. It was the capital of the Alaungpaya dynasty in 1752–63.
