Siberian Sky Gods

Asian Mythology: Siberian Sky Gods

The supreme being for most Siberians (see Siberian entries) is the Sky, a creator who tends not to interfere in his creation, but whose presence assures harmony and order in the universe. His contact with humans is by way of messengers and shamans. The Tungus call this god Buga. Others call him Es or Turum, or Num (See Tengri). The Sky usually has an evil brother or companion who competes with him as a creator and who can cause difficulties for humans (See Siberian Creation). Associated with the supreme deity are lesser sky gods such as the Sun and Moon, who are sometimes husband and wife, sometimes brother and sister. Often it is the Moon who is male (See Siberian Spirits).
