Biography

With a name like Sick Puppies, you wouldn't think hugs would play a major role in the gutsy indie crew's rise to fame, but they do, along with malls and the video-sharing site YouTube. When they met in 1997, singer/lead guitarist Shimon Moore and bassist Emma Anzai were both fans of Silverchair and the Living End plus many of the other angst rock/punk rock bands from their native Australia. Soon Chris Mileski joined on drums and a series of live gigs led to some local recognition and the 1999 EP Dog's Breakfast. Two years later, their song "Nothing Really Matters" won the Unearthed competition, which Australia's Triple J radio network held to find homegrown and undiscovered talent.

Tours across the country followed and an unreleased and aggressive cover version of Destiny's Child's "Say My Name" was soon burning up P2P networks, but when the bandmembers set their sights on America they took a break to plan. They also took days jobs. Moore's was at an outdoor shopping mall, where he would soon meet performance artist Juan Mann, who would carry a "Free Hugs" sign around the mall and oblige anyone who took him up on it. Moore filmed the positive and negative reactions and eventually compiled them, adding the Sick Puppies song "All the Same" as the musical bed. He sent it as video sympathy card when he learned Mann had just lost his grandmother. Mann was touched, posted it to YouTube}, and by December 2006 the heartwarming video had ten million views.

Meanwhile, the band had landed in America -- with Mileski replaced by new drummer Mark Goodwin -- and worked a deal with the indie label Roadshow, which released a self-titled EP by the band at the end of 2006. Given those ten million video views, it didn't take long for the majors to come calling. Virgin wooed them and released the album

Sick Puppies rose to prominence in 2006 when their song "All the Same" was uploaded along with a video to YouTube. The video supported the Free Hugs Campaign which was launched in Sydney, and has since received over 50 million views on the website. This success followed up with Dressed Up as Life in 2007, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 181. Their third studio album is titled Tri-Polar.

Career

Early career

The band was formed by singer/lead guitarist Shimon Moore and bassist Emma Anzai in the music room of Mosman High School in 1997, where the two connected because of their shared love for Silverchair. Initially with Shimon on drums and Emma on guitars, the duo would frequently meet up in their high school band room to play Green Day, Rage Against the Machine and Silverchair songs and eventually felt compelled to write their own material. When Chris Mileski joined the band to play drums, they became the Sick Puppies. Shimon Moore came up with the band name after consulting with his father and seeing a large number of people reading the book Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaasen. Emma Anzai took up a job as a telemarketer and Shimon took a job holding a sandwich board in the Pitt Street Mall in Sydney, Australia. Through their own financing and with help from Shimon's father, the band released their debut EP Dog's Breakfast.

Welcome to the Real World

In 2001, the band released their first studio album, Welcome to the Real World. Welcome to the Real World was a hit in Australia and led to the band winning the Triple J Unearthed band competition that is held annually in Australia. This contest led to a management deal with Paul Stepanek Management. Chris Mileski was unable to leave Australia so he was eventually replaced by current drummer Mark Goodwin.

Dressed up as Life

In 2007 they released their second studio album (first on a major label), Dressed Up As Life. This album featured their breakout single "All the Same", which reached number eight on the U.S. Modern Rock chart and is also featured as the soundtrack for the Free hugs campaign video which won YouTube video of the year in 2006. They followed up their debut with the single "My World", which peaked at number twenty.

Tri-Polar

The band went into the recording studio in December 2008 to write, record and produce their next studio album that was released on July 14, 2009. The band stated on March 13, 2009 that their new record Tri-Polar was very close to being finished. Recently they have broadcasted their in studio rehearsals and answered fan questions live on the website ustream.tv every Wednesday night at 8:00PM EST[2]. They also wrote a song for Capcom's video game Street Fighter IV called "Street Fighter (War)" and it has only been used in the advertisements and promotion for the game[3]. This song has also reached the top 40 on the iTunes top rock songs. Street Fighter (War) was used during the Washington Capitals 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs introduction video.[4] Their first single off Tripolar, "You're Going Down" was used as the theme song for the WWE pay per view "Extreme Rules" in June 2009.

Musical style

Sick Puppies have been classified as Nu Metal in their early days but are now classified as an Alternative metal and Post-Grunge band.
