A pot separate from the main pot, which is created for the remaining active players when one or more players have run out of chips.
SoundPoker Says: Any time a player goes all-in, they are unable to continue calling any bet which exceeds the all-in amount. Instead of limiting the hand because a single player cannot continue betting, a new pot is created for players who are still active and still have money. The main pot is still won by the best hand on the table, but the new side pot can only be won by players who are still active and have put money into the side pot.
For example, let's say John has a pair of kings (K-K), Mark has a pair of aces (A-A) and Greg has a pair of jacks (J-J) on a board of 2-3-4-7-9 rainbow. Mark (A-A) has gone all in, and both John (K-K) and Greg (J-J) call the bet. John (K-K) then re-raises Greg (J-J), which Greg calls, creating a side-pot between John and Greg. Mark has the best hand overall (A-A) and thus wins the main pot. Unfortunately for Mark he is not a part of the side pot because he didn't have the money to put in. Hence the side pot is won by John because his K-K beats out Greg's J-J.
