Sidney Carter

Carter, Sidney (1880-1956), Canadian photographer, elected to the Photo-Secession in 1904. This inspired him to establish a national pictorialist group, the Studio Club, with Harold Mortimer-Lamb (1872-1970) and fellow Secessionist Percy Hodgins. Carter worked in banking until 1906, when he moved from Toronto to Montreal, starting a portrait studio with Mortimer-Lamb. In 1907 he organized Canada's first major exhibition of pictorial photography at Montreal's Art Association. He worked sporadically as an art and antiques dealer, and maintained a photography studio from 1917 until 1930, producing society and celebrity portraits in a haunting Symbolist style.
