Review
Ali N. Askin's innovative score to the 1998 German chiller Sieben Monde abandons conventional notions of film music in favor of a pulsing, drum'n'bass-inspired approach seemingly better suited for the club than the cinema -- except it works, and quite convincingly at that. While the relentless rhythms generate their fair share of kinetic energy, Askin wisely incorporates organic elements into the mix as well, employing violin and flute to humanize what is otherwise music produced purely by technological means. If the results are still alienating and forbidding -- well, this is horror music, after all -- what better to evoke the bloodless calculations of evil than a score with the soul of a machine? ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi| Sieben Leben [Bonus Tracks] (2011 Album by Matthias Reim) | |
