Biography

As Mafia daughter Meadow Soprano on HBO's runaway smash The Sopranos, dark-haired beauty Jamie-Lynn Sigler makes male viewers' eyes pop. Bada-bing. Young, fresh, and fresh-mouthed, her character is the Don's darling. Thanks to an opportunity the series gave her to sing in one episode, she also embarked on a career in pop music, à la teen queen Britney Spears or Latina diva Jennifer Lopez. Sigler nixed the idea of allowing her record company, Edeltone, to call her first album Bada Bing.

Instead, the 2001 release is titled Here to Heaven, although it did end up with a track called "Bada Bing." But Sigler should have no complaints. Barely into her twenties, she has a prominent role on a hit television show, a new career in pop, credits as a songwriter for a trio of numbers she contributed to the album, a New York City apartment of her own, and, when she's ready to return to it after a leave of absence, a college education at New York University, where she intends to study psychology. She intends to pursue a career as a theater therapist, a job that will allow her to use her acting skills to help disabled children. Personnel who worked on her first musical release include Ray Contreras and Jimmy Greco, the pair of producers behind J.Lo from Lopez, and Desmond Child, a successful veteran of the music industry who has had a hand in the recordings of Ricky Martin and others.

Sigler wasn't always secure in the role of Meadow Soprano. In the early days of the series, there had been talk around the network of bringing in a blonde actress to take over the role. After four shows had been shot, however, the network scrubbed the idea of a replacement for Sigler due to cost concerns. With her dark looks, Sigler certainly looks as if she could be Italian, although in reality she is a mix of Cuban and Jewish. Acting and singing were activities that she always wanted to pursue and by the time she had turned a precocious three years old, the entertainer had requested dance lessons. Within four years she wanted to study acting and voice, too. During elementary school, her aptitude earned her a spot in a program for gifted children. Her parents allowed her to audition for theatrical roles with the caveat that she had to keep her grades up, and she landed roles in a Hofstra University production of Annie as well as in Long Island theaters. An agent from Star Talent Management, Lois Miller, saw a video of the Hofstra performance and agreed to represent the youngster. By high school, Sigler was landing television commercials, title roles in productions of The Wizard of Oz and The Diary of Anne Frank, and a part in the movie Brooklyn State of Mind. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide

Biography

New York native Jamie-Lynn Sigler started acting at the tender age of seven, appearing in regional theater productions and eventually working her way up through the professional ranks. In 1999, she added on-camera acting to her repertoire when she was cast as Meadow Soprano, daughter of mob boss Tony Soprano on the smash-hit HBO Mafia series The Sopranos, but she didn't take stage acting off her list of priorities. By 2001, the 20-year-old actress had nabbed the lead role in a touring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, opposite Eartha Kitt, and by 2002, she was starring as Belle in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast.

The Sopranos became a cultural phenomenon and Sigler became a household name. She took the opportunity to try out other projects, like the 2004 TV movie Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss, in which she played the title role. She also got married to her agent, A.J. DiScala, in 2003 and changed her name to Jamie-Lynn DiScala, saying that she was a traditional girl and had always planned to take her husband's name. Unfortunately, their marriage came to an end in 2006, and the young actress went back to her maiden name.

As The Sopranos approached its sixth and final season in 2007, Sigler had a number or projects waiting in the wings. She'd already signed on to appear in two comedies slated for release later that year: New York City Serenade, with Freddie Prinze Jr., and Homie Spumoni, with Whoopi Goldberg. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early life

Sigler was born in Queens, New York City to Steve and Connie Sigler. Her father is Jewish, the son of immigrants from Greece and Romania, and her mother is a Cuban-born convert to Judaism.[1] Sigler grew up on Long Island in Jericho, New York, and began acting and singing at age 7. She attended Jericho High School.[2] Sigler also attended the Cultural Arts Playhouse where she played many leads.

Acting career

In 1997, she was cast as the smart but troubled Meadow Soprano, daughter of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano. The show premiered in 1999 and became a huge success, with Sigler rising to some fame as a TV actress.

In 2000, while filming Campfire Stories in Hamburg, New Jersey, Sigler was paralyzed from the waist down for several days having contracted Lyme disease.[3] Sigler then spent five months on Broadway from October 2002 through February 2003 playing Belle in Beauty and the Beast where she replaced long-running Belle Sarah Litzsinger. She has continued to appear in theatrical roles, such as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.

In 2004, she starred as "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss in the USA television movie Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss next to actor Jason Stewart. In that same year, she had her first starring feature film role, Extreme Dating, an independent film.

In 2005, Sigler starred in Lovewrecked and the following year in Homie Spumoni, when she played the role of Alli, a girlfriend to Renato/Leroy (Donald Faison) directed by Mike Cerron.

Also in October 2008, she appeared as herself in the fifth season of the HBO series "Entourage", appearing in the episodes "First Class Jerk" , "Playing With Fire" and "Return to Queens Blvd". She returned for season six of the series. On November 17, 2008, Sigler guest-starred as Jillian on the TV series How I Met Your Mother in the episode "Woooo!"[4] On the December 6, 2008 airing of Saturday Night Live, Jamie-Lynn appeared as the checkout girl for the SNL Digital Short music video, Jizz in My Pants by The Lonely Island.[5]

Other work

In 2001, she released a pop album called Here to Heaven, which featured the single "Cry Baby". The album was a commercial failure and had low sales. In 2007 Sigler said she was "embarrassed" by the album and regrets releasing it.[6]

In 2002, she co-authored an autobiography, Wise Girl: What I've Learned About Life, Love, and Loss. In October 2008, the actress paired up with MasterCard to promote the MasterCard Savings Program, a new rewards program for debit MasterCard and prepaid MasterCard cardholders.

Personal life

During the early production of The Sopranos, Sigler struggled with an eating disorder and is now a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorders Association. Sigler appeared in a CNN special with Paula Zahn in which she, jockey Shane Sellers, actress Jane Fonda, and two others revealed their struggles with eating disorders. After overcoming her disorder, Sigler posed for several men's magazines including Maxim.

On July 11, 2003, Sigler married her agent and longtime boyfriend, A. J. DiScala. She subsequently changed her name to Jamie-Lynn DiScala, stating she is a very "traditional girl", and never had any doubt that she would take her husband's name after marrying, even professionally. However, in September 2005, Sigler and DiScala announced that they were separating, and she subsequently changed her name back.[7] She is currently linked to Entourage actor Jerry Ferrara, whom she met while making an appearance on Entourage.[8]

She is close friends with pop singer Lance Bass;[9] a review by Bass was featured on the back cover of Sigler's 2002 memoir, Wise Girl: What I've Learned About Life, Love, and Loss.[10]

During January 2008, Sigler visited Israel through the Birthright Israel program and subsequently was moved by the trip, calling Israel "one of the most beautiful, inspiring places I've ever been to." She further noted that the trip gave her a greater understanding to preserve her Jewish identity and, after talks with Israeli soldiers who were also participants on the trip, she expressed solidarity towards the efforts of the young soldiers.[11]
