Wikipedia: sign bit

In computer science the sign bit is the bit in a computer numbering format which indicates the sign of the number. Typically the bit is the most significant bit in the format. Typically if the sign bit is 1 the number is negative (in the case of two's complement integers) or non-positive (for the case of ones' complement integers, sign-magnitude integers, and floating point numbers). Typically if the sign bit is 0 the number is positive.
