Signal Intelligence Service

U.S. Army Signal Corps element created in 1929 to manage all U.S. Army code and cipher work. The Signal Intelligence Service, headed by William F. Friedman, also absorbed the covert code-breaking and intelligence-gathering activities formerly conducted by the so-called Black Chamber within the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department General Staff.
