An investor who does not have any management responsibilities but provides capital and shares liability for any losses experienced by the entity.

Investopedia Says:
Silent partners are liable for in any losses up to the amount of their invested capital and participate in any tax and cash flow benefits.

Also known as a "sleeping partner".

1. Limited partner in a Direct Participation Program, such as real estate and oil and gas limited partnerships, in which Cash Flow and tax benefits are passed directly through to shareholders. Such partners are called silent because, unlike general partners, they have no direct role in management and no liability beyond their individual investment.

2. -general partner in a business who has no role in management but represents a sharing of the investment and liability. Silent partners of this type are often found in family businesses, where the intent is to distribute tax liability.

An investor in a business enterprise who either does not take an active role in the management of the business, or whose identity is not revealed to third parties; a principal whose identity is not disclosed by his or her agent. While the identity of a silent partner may or may not be disclosed, the silent partner, nonetheless, participates in the profits or losses of the enterprise. See principal [undisclosed principal].

Refers to a player to whom a cheater or thief deals several winning hands, usually in small pots, with the intention of diverting attention away from themselves. The player to which they are giving winning hands is usually entirely innocent, a non-cheater, who the thief just happens to pick as a distractor.

SoundPoker Says: They are termed the silent partner because their involvement is unknown except to the cheater, as is the silent partner in a business who is generally only known to the top levels in a company (or casino).
