Biography

Martin studied music in the locale of his youth but after becoming the organist at Lambourne he was able to study at Oxford. He became the organist for the Duke of Buccleuch at Dalkeith and choirmaster at St. Paul's Cathedral. In 1888 he became the organist at St. Paul's following Stainer's resignaion. With a BMus from Oxford, Lambeth MusD, and DMus, Oxford, Martin was a distinguished musical scholar. The most important composition he scored was a "Te Deum" for which he received knighthood. His other works, unfortunately, were emotional at best but lacking in creativity. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
