Palmer, James Shedden (1810-67) Union naval officer, born in New Jersey. During the battle of Vicksburg (1863), his effort to draw fire away from Admiral David Farragut's ship won him Farragut's respect and support.

Palmer earned the nickname “Piecrust Palmer” by his habit of donning formal dress before entering battle.
