The rigid framework of the body made of bone and cartilage. It maintains body shape, supports soft tissues, and acts as a system of levers facilitating locomotion. In addition, some parts of the skeleton manufacture red blood cells and store materials, such as some minerals. There are about 200 bones in the body making up more than 20 per cent of the body mass.
