Place Names: Slaný
  • Location: Czech Republic
  • Variant names: Na Zlanem, Schlan
The original fortified settlement was on a hill overlooking the present town; it was called Na Zlanem 'On the Salty Hill' because it was near a salt spring. In the 12th century Benedictines built a monastery here around which a town arose and this was given the name Slaný 'Salty'.
