A low-impact, aerobic exercise that strengthens the hips, knees, and ankles. Slide training is performed on a smooth plastic board with bumpers at either end to allow the exerciser to push off and slide. By swinging the arms and pushing with the legs, the exerciser can create a variety of sliding movements similar to those produced by a speed skater. A cloth over each training shoe makes sliding easier. It is a good exercise for promoting cardiovascular fitness, especially when incorporated into circuit training. Some running coaches have advocated slide training because it is especially effective at working the buttock muscles that help to stabilize the body during running, so it improves running economy. Slide training should be avoided by those suffering groin strain, lower back, or knee problems.
