Review
There's something charmingly absurd about the notion that the Gourds bassist/songwriter Jimmy Smith assumes not one, but two pseudonyms to share the billing on his first solo outing. Jimmy Smith as Dusty Slosinger fills the roles of lead vocals, guitars, and pump organ, while Jimmy Smith as Clocker Redbury is the drummer, bassist, backing vocalist, and engineer. So it's no surprise that the adventure, documented entirely on four-track, is a schizophrenic affair with slap-dash production and loaded with Smith's trademark charisma and amiable lyrics. The rest of the Gourds also make appearances here (with only one alias apiece) as does Mike Nicolai, and a few others, but the instrumentation and performance is largely Smith. The opening track, "Loveseat," sets up the entire listen nicely over a plucky mandolin supplied by Giles Robinowitz (a.k.a. Kevin Russell), and "Psycho Jerk" and "Phil's Jasper" are immediate standouts -- what with the hook of the former so catchy, one might find it difficult not to melodically spout the title's insult at every passerby, whether appropriate or not. There's not a bad track on the record, and while it is more sparse than any of the Gourds' releases, it is a definite must-have for fans of the Gourds. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music GuideTracks
