Biography

The alternative CCM group Smalltown Poets was formed in Tifton, GA. by singer/guitarist Michael Johnston, keyboardist Danny Stephens and drummer Byron Goggin, high school pals who'd played in bands together throughout their formative years (including Villanelle, which released an independent-label album titled Pinwheels and Orange Peels in 1996). In the spring of 1996, the lineup grew to include guitarist Kevin Breuner and bassist Miguel DeJesus; a year later, the Smalltown Poets signed to Chordant to issue their self-titled debut album. A series of lineup changes followed before the group -- now consisting of Johnston, Breuner, DeJesus and drummer Nathan Blackstone -- resurfaced with Listen Closely in 1999 and Third Verse in fall 2000. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Smalltown Poets is a Christian rock band formed in 1996. It was formed in Tifton, Georgia by high school friends Michael Johnston (guitars/vocals), Danny Stephens (keyboards), and Byron Goggin (drums).

The band was originally named Villanelle when it was formed by Byron Goggins (drums), John Graham (bass guitar), Michael Johnston (lead vocals), Lee Moody (guitar), and Danny Stephens (keyboards). The band achieved recognition with their eponymous first album, released in 1997. Despite line-up changes, the band has managed to stay active[citation needed] for more than ten years, releasing three albums on Ardent Records and one on BEC Recordings. The band is currently on hiatus after their fourth studio album called It's Later Than It's Ever Been.
