English family of musicians. The most celebrated member was Sir George (1776-1867), a conductor, organist and singing teacher. His efficiency, meticulous knowledge of performing traditions and personal associations with Haydn, Beethoven, Weber and Mendelssohn made him one of the most well-respected music directors of his day. He conducted the English premières of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Mendelssohn's St Paul and presided at numerous London orchestral concerts (1813-44), provincial festivals (1823-40) and court musical events. His nephew Henry Thomas (1813-79), a largely self-taught organist and composer, was known for his expertise in organ construction and his voluminous organ and service music (including the popular hymn tune Regent Square) and attractive partsongs.
