Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area

An urban area of the USA. This can be a town of 50 000 people or two towns, each with more than 15 000 people, and together totalling more than 50 000, or a county with more than 75% of its population working in industry. In addition to these three categories are areas which seem, by employment, commuting, or population density, to be urban rather than rural.
