Snowfall [Living Era]

Album Review: Snowfall [Living Era]

Review

Any chance to appreciate the imaginative arrangements of Claude Thornhill is worth savoring, as his meticulous determination and playful disposition flutter out with each note he recorded. Living Era's Snowfall collection reflects this quite well; however, each of the recordings on the collection is in mono, and although that might be an exciting notion to purists, it does tend to rob some of the richness of Thornhill's dense arrangements. Regardless, the title track is delightful in any incarnation (and there are many, since it was the orchestra's theme) due to its cinematic shuffle and surprising dynamics. To hear it alongside Thornhill's arrangements of the traditional Scottish folk song "Loch Lomond" (led by Maxine Sullivan's lovely vocal) and "Autumn Nocturne" (during which Thornhill very cleverly overlays quotes from George Gershwin's classic "Rhapsody in Blue") as well as Gil Evans' forward-thinking arrangements of "I Knew You When," Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite," and others makes this set worth spinning on an early Saturday evening. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guide
