Business Dictionary: Social Security Credits

Under Social Security, they determine one's eligibility for Social Security programs. A person earns credits by working in a job covered by Social Security and by paying Social Security taxes. In 1999, one credit was earned for each $740 in Social Security earnings. A maximum of four credits can be earned in a year. A minimum of 40 credits must be earned to qualify for retirement benefits.
