With actors, authors, and almost all other theatrical branches formed into unions it was only a matter of time before the stagers of plays and musicals banded together. This group was founded in 1959 and in 1962 was recognized by the League of American Theatres and Producers. While many professional directors do not belong to the union and it does not carry the clout of the other labor groups in theatre, the society has effectively managed to allow directors to protect their work and to share in royalties.
