Software in the Public Interest (SPI) is a nonprofit organization established in 1997 that helps organizations develop and distribute open source (free) hardware and software. They encourage programmers to use the GNU General Public License or other licenses that allow free redistribution and use of software. SPI is an umbrella organization for 13 open source industry projects: Debian, Drupal, Fresco, freedesktop.org, Gallery, GNUstep, GNU TeXmacs, OFTC, OpenOffice.org, OpenVAS, Open Voting Foundation, PostgreSQL, and wxWidgets.

Software in the Public Interest, Inc. (SPI) is a non-profit organization formed to help other organizations create and distribute free/open-source software and open source hardware. Anyone is eligible to apply for membership, and contributing membership is available to those who participate actively in the free software community.
