Ancient seaport, Anatolia. Located in what is now south-central Turkey, it was founded by Greek colonists from Rhodes and was a principal city of Cilicia. It was later conquered by Alexander the Great (333 ). Destroyed in the 1st century by Tigranes II of Armenia, it was rebuilt by the Roman general Pompey the Great. Traces of the port's artificial harbour and a portion of a long colonnade remain.

Soli ('), ancient city of Cilicia, SW of Tarsus, in present-day Turkey. It was founded c.700 B.C. by colonists from Rhodes. An important port at the time of Alexander the Great, Soli was destroyed in the 1st cent. B.C. by Tigranes of Armenia. It was rebuilt by Pompey, who called it Pompeiopolis. The word solecism is derived from the corrupt dialect of Greek spoken by the people of Soli.
