Solikamsk (Russian: Солика́мск) is a city in Perm Krai, Russia. It is the third-largest city in Perm Krai, with a population of 102,531 (2002 Census);[1] 110,098 (1989 Census).[2]
It was founded in 1430. The city name is derived from the Russian words "соль" (sol, meaning "salt") and Кама (Kama River, flowing through the city).
It is famous for its production of salt, in particular, potassium chloride, which is used as a fertilizer. More than 11,000 people work in salt mining, 3,000 underground, and 7,000 above ground. It is also close to a gulag during the soviet times, which is now closed. It was also a 'labor camp'. It is now used as a museum. There is also a museum dedicated to explaining all stages of salt mining and refining.
The city is one of not many in Russia that preserved the authentic Russian culture throughout the years of the Soviet government policy which especially in 1920s - 1930s caused a major blow to cultural heritage of Russians. From 1573 and until 1923 the city was an administrative center of the Solikamsk uyezd in the Perm Governorate. In mid XVII century the city became an industrial center of copper casting.
