‘Alone’: term that identifies, in a score, a passage that needs to be brought out, or is to be played by one performer alone (rather than doubled by others), or shows which portions in a concerto are dominated by the soloist. The term is also used for a piece played by a single performer or, in the Baroque period, a single instrument with continuo accompaniment. The term ‘solo sonata’ may carry either of those meanings.
