Review

Given the tightly controlled nature of American Idol, it's a wonder that the televised talent contest has never produced a winner who specialized in country music, since there's no segment of modern popular music that is controlled tighter than contemporary country. Maybe this thought was in the minds of Simon Fuller and the rest of AmIdol's 19 management when they went into their fourth season in 2005, since as soon as fresh-faced Oklahoma blonde Carrie Underwood showed up in the audition rounds, the judges -- alright, specifically Simon Cowell -- pigeonholed her as a country singer, even if there was nothing specifically country about her sweet, friendly voice. From that point on, she was not only the frontrunner, but anointed as the show's first country winner, which apparently proved more enticing to the voters and the producers than the prospect of the show's first rock & roll winner in the guise of the Southern-fried hippie throwback Bo Bice. Which makes sense: cute, guileless young girls have a broader appeal than hairy 30-somethings. They're easier to sell and mold too, and Underwood proved particularly ideal in this regard since she was a blank slate, possessing a very good voice and an unthreatening prettiness that would be equally marketable and likeable in either country or pop. So, the powers that be decided that Underwood would be a contemporary country singer in the vein of Faith Hill -- she'd sing anthemic country pop, ideal for either country or adult contemporary radio, with none of the delightful tackiness of Shania Twain -- and her debut album, Some Hearts, not only hits this mark exactly, it's better than either album Hill has released since Breathe in 1999. Which isn't to say that Carrie Underwood is as compelling or as distinctive as a personality or vocalist as Faith Hill: Underwood is still developing her own style and, for as good a singer as she is, she doesn't have much of a persona beyond that of the girl next door made good. But that's enough to make Some Hearts work, since she's surrounded by professionals, headed by producers Mark Bright and Dann Huff, who know how to exploit that persona effectively. While some of the songs drift a little bit toward the generic, especially in regard to the adult contemporary ballads, most of the material is slick, sturdy, and memorable, delivered with conviction by Underwood. She sounds equally convincing on such sentimental fare as "Jesus, Take the Wheel" as on the soaring pop "Some Hearts," and even if she doesn't exactly sound tough on the strutting "Before He Cheats," she does growl with a fair amount of passion. In fact, the worst thing here is her chart-topping post-American Idol hit "Inside Your Heaven," which is as formulaic as the mainstream country-pop that comprises the rest of Some Hearts, but with one crucial difference: the formula doesn't work, the song is too sappy and transparent, the arrangement too cold. On the rest of Some Hearts, everything clicks -- the production is warm, the tunes inoffensive but ingratiating, it straddles the country and pop worlds with ease, and most importantly, it's every bit as likeable as Carrie was on American Idol. Which means that even if she's not nearly as sassy or charismatic as Kelly Clarkson -- she's not as spunky as Nashville Star finalist Miranda Lambert, for that matter -- Carrie Underwood has delivered the best post-AmIdol record since Clarkson's debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Some Hearts is the debut album from fourth-season American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, released in the United States on November 15, 2005. It has been certified seven times platinum in the U.S. (RIAA) and three times platinum in Canada (CRIA). On December 4, 2006, Some Hearts was named the number-one selling album of the year in all genres at the Billboard Music Awards. It is also the best selling debut album by a solo female country music artist in history and the best selling album by an American Idol alumnus in the United States. The album contains the #1 singles "Inside Your Heaven", "Jesus, Take the Wheel", "Don't Forget to Remember Me", "Wasted", and "Before He Cheats", her biggest hit to date.

To promote Some Hearts, Carrie embarked on her very first solo tour, which was called Carrie Underwood: Live 2006. The tour started April 4, 2006 and ended November 30 of the same year.

With 6,859,000 copies sold in the United States, Some Hearts is listed as one of the 100 Best Selling Albums of All Time by the RIAA.[1]. In December 2009, Billboard announced that the album was the biggest-selling country album of the decade, as well as the fourteenth biggest-selling album of any genre.[2]

Commercial performance

Some Hearts debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 behind Madonna's Confessions On A Dance Floor, selling more than 315,000 copies; it was the fifth best first-week sales for any American Idol contestant (behind Ruben Studdard's Soulful, her own Play On and Carnival Ride, and Clay Aiken's Measure of a Man, which sold over 467,000 copies, 318,000 copies, 527,000 copies and 613,000 copies, respectively, in their first weeks). In the week of December 25, 2006, the album's fifty-eighth week on the chart, the album rose back up to number four on the Billboard 200 chart after selling close to 300,000 copies.

Some Hearts was the highest selling country album in the U.S. in both 2006 and 2007. The album now certified 7x Platinum and is the best-selling debut album of a female country artist.

As of July 3, 2008, the album is no longer present on the U.S. Billboard 200. It had a run of 136 weeks, the second-longest for any album released in 2005, behind Nickelback's All the Right Reasons. The following week, it dropped out of the Top Country Albums Chart, having had a 137 week run.

On the week dated December 12, 2009, under the changes of Billboard's rules, the album re-entered the Billboard 200, at #132.

The album has sold 6,901,000 copies in the United States.[3]

Some Hearts was the first album to be certified seven times platinum in 2007, and it is the highest certified album by an American Idol contestant. Some Hearts was the third best selling album of 2006, and the best selling album of the Billboard magazine year (November 14, 2005 – November 12, 2006). Some Hearts is named Top Country Album of the Decade and 14th Top Album in the all-genre Billboard Top 200 Decade Ender Charts.

Singles

Carrie Underwood's American Idol winning single "Inside Your Heaven", which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 five months before the release of Some Hearts, is included on the album as a bonus track.

The first single from the album, "Jesus, Take the Wheel", was number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for six consecutive weeks and reached number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Some Hearts", a cover of the Marshall Crenshaw song, was released to pop and adult contemporary radio only and eventually reached number twelve on the Adult Contemporary chart.

"Don't Forget to Remember Me" was the third single from the album, and also proved successful, reaching number one on the Radio & Records Country Chart, number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and number forty-nine on the Hot 100.

"Before He Cheats" was released as the next single, and climbed the charts faster than any of Underwood's other singles, making it into the top twenty of the Hot Country Songs chart before the release of a music video. "Before He Cheats" subsequently peaked at number one on the Hot Country Songs chart for five consecutive weeks, and at number eight on the Hot 100; it proved to be a huge crossover hit, making appearances in the top twenty of every chart on which it appeared, and it is the biggest hit overall from the album.

"Wasted" also proved another successful hit for Underwood by peaking at number one for three consecutive weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart, and going to number thirty-seven on the Hot 100.
