Biography

Of the myriad young alt-rock bands to arise in the early 2000s, Something Corporate stood out with their piano-fueled songcraft and crossover potential. On one hand, the bandmembers were barely out of high school when the esteemed California-based punk label Drive-Thru signed them, which helped Something Corporate connect with a large audience of West Coast teenage hipsters looking for a band to claim as their own. On the other hand, the band didn't play punk rock; they played polished, literate, radio-ready alt-rock -- a marketable sound that MCA recognized just before connecting with the band for a debut EP, Audioboxer. Released in late 2001, Audioboxer featured only six songs yet showcased the band's promise as it synthesized alt-rock guitar crunch with a bit of impassioned emo-styled songwriting and singing. It also didn't hurt that the band boasted a bona fide poster boy in songwriter/pianist/vocalist Andrew McMahon, a blossoming talent who would later launch his own act, Jack's Mannequin.

Before the Orange County band became Something Corporate, McMahon, drummer Brian Ireland, and bassist Clutch played in a different ground that they'd formed for a high-school "battle of the bands" competition. Although they won the battle, the band didn't last very long. McMahon then met guitarist Josh Partington at a high-school party; with a renewed sense of enthusiasm, the teens started jamming together as Something Corporate. They soon added guitarist William Tell and began playing local clubs, which eventually lead to one-off gigs opening for bands like Sugar Ray and Better Than Ezra.

Drive-Thru noticed the buzz and came knocking. Even though the label was known primarily as a youth punk label -- and Something Corporate were far from that -- the partnership made sense; Drive-Thru recognized the band's potential as a crossover act and Something Corporate recognized the label's reputation as a respected indie. MCA then came into the picture primarily as a distributor, though the major label did use its clout to market the band. Their summer-tinged debut full-length, Leaving Through the Window, shared both label's logos and appeared in spring 2002. Subsequent touring followed before their somewhat darker sophomore effort, North, was issued in October 2003.

Guitarist William Tell amicably left the group in early 2004 to work on solo material, shortly before Something Corporate headed out on a nationwide co-headlining tour with Yellowcard. Bob Anderson (formerly of River City High) replaced Tell on the tour, allowing the band to replicate many of the album's vocal harmonies in a live setting. A concert DVD entitled Live at the Ventura Theater was released in November 2004.

A hiatus followed, during which McMahon returned to California and launched his solo project, Jack's Mannequin. The debut Mannequin record came out in late summer 2005, but a supporting tour was canceled after McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in June. Touring for both bands was then put on hold while he went through treatment; by the year's end, he had recovered from a successful bone marrow transplant from his sister. McMahon then turned his full attention to the Jack's Mannequin project, whose debut album, Everything in Transit, had broken into the Billboard Top 40. Another Jack's Mannequin album arrived in 2008, leaving Something Corporate's future undecided. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Something Corporate is an American rock band from Orange County, California, formed in 1998. Their last known line-up consisted of pianist and vocalist Andrew McMahon, guitarist Josh Partington, bassist Kevin Page and drummer Brian Ireland.

Following their formation, Something Corporate released a minor studio album titled Ready... Break. It was followed up by signing to Drive-Thru Records and Audioboxer, which featured the song "If You C Jordan", which was their most successful single, peaking at number 29 on the Alternative Songs chart. The band then signed to MCA Records, which later merged with Geffen. Their first major label studio album was titled Leaving Through the Window (2002) and peaked at number 101 on the Billboard 200.

They are currently on indefinite hiatus and are not signed to any label. Following the hiatus, McMahon found success in his side-project Jack's Mannequin.

History

Formation and early releases

In September 1998, three former members of the band Left Here; vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon, bassist Kevin "Clutch" Page, and drummer Brian Ireland, merged with lead guitarist Josh Partington and rhythm guitarist Reuben Hernandez, to form Something Corporate. The band independently released a demo CD titled Ready... Break in September 2000. On March 27, 2001, Something Corporate announced an official change to the band's lineup; Hernandez was permanently replaced by his temporary fill-in, William Tell.

The band signed with Drive-Thru Records and released the band's official debut effort, an EP titled Audioboxer (2001). It was promoted nationwide through tours, in-store performances at Tower Records stores and a television appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn on February 25, 2002. The EP featured the single "If U C Jordan", with its music video starring American Pie's Chris Owen. A clause in Drive-Thru Records' distribution deal led to a signing with their distributor MCA, which later merged with Geffen Records.

Major label debut and follow-up

In May 2002, Something Corporate released their debut major label album, Leaving Through the Window. It contained the singles "I Woke Up in a Car" and "Punk Rock Princess". The album hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and number 101 on the Billboard 200.[2] Something Corporate released a half-hour home video on DVD, titled A Year in the Life in November 2002. Furthermore, they released the B-sides compilation EP Songs for Silent Movies, only available in Japan.

In October 2003, Something Corporate released their second full-length record, North. The album debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200. They launched the album with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, performing the songs "If U C Jordan" and "Space", the latter of which became the only single from the album. In February 2004, it was confirmed that William Tell had left Something Corporate to pursue a solo career. Bobby Anderson, formerly of the band River City High, replaced Tell as the band's touring guitarist. On May 20, 2004, Something Corporate filmed their concert at the Ventura Theater in Ventura, California. The footage was released as their second DVD, Live at the Ventura Theater.

Hiatus

In summer 2004, the band grew exhausted from spending years on the road and decided to take a break. The band promised the break would not be a permanent one.[citation needed] During the hiatus, McMahon formed a side project named Jack's Mannequin. The band released an album entitled Everything in Transit in August 2005. The day that recording for the album was completed, McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He has since gone into remission. In 2008, McMahon released a second album with Jack's Mannequin, The Glass Passenger. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, surpassing the success he achieved with Something Corporate.[3] Partington also formed the band Firescape, who have released an EP and studio album.

On October 14, 2006 the band reunited to perform three songs; "Konstantine", "I Woke Up in a Car" and "Hurricane". They played as the "special guest" at the Bamboozle Left festival in Pomona, California. In 2007, it was said that Something Corporate's status as a band could be described as is in "suspended animation". McMahon told Alternative Press that he is more "nostalgically charged" than "creatively charged" to make another Something Corporate record.[4]

In a February 2009 interview with Lansing State Journal, Andrew McMahon discussed the future of Something Corporate. He said, "As for releasing a full-length with a tour in the classic sense, I don't see that happening. But we're all great friends, and I do see us putting together new material and hitting the road. The fans have been so supportive and such a huge part of our lives that I would feel horrible not to at least give them something."[citation needed]

In September 2009, Andrew McMahon claimed in an interview with 20 Watts magazine at Syracuse University's Juice Jam event that he was currently discussing the possibility of a Something Corporate reunion tour with his former bandmates, implying that there's a high chance of a Something Corporate reunion as soon as it would fit in with each band member's schedules.
