Review

Stone's first album was titled Somewhere in L.A., but Los Angeles isn't the first place you think of when listening to gritty, rootsy numbers like "Drift," "Heaven Only Knows" and "Teaser" -- much of the time, Stone's roots-rock, pop/rock and blues-rock sounds like the work of a Midwestern bar band rather than that of three L.A. residents. From Stone's own material to a cover of Muddy Waters' "I'm Ready," this CD often makes you feel like you've just stepped into a working-class beer bar somewhere in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio or Indiana. Even on a tune as pop-minded as "Don't Walk Away," Stone doesn't get terribly slick. The trio's lack of pretense is rather refreshing, and while nothing mind-blowing occurs, Somewhere in L.A. is enjoyable and definitely honest. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
