In Japan "non-life" isn't creepy, it's just car insurance, and Sompo Japan is one of the biggest players. Voluntary and compulsory automobile insurance combined make up nearly 70% of the insurance company's premiums. Though non-life is its largest segment, the company also provides life insurance through its subsidiaries Sompo Japan Himawari Life and Sompo Japan DIY Life Insurance. It also provides reinsurance, asset management, and venture capital. The art world knows the firm for its 1987 purchase of a version of Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" that some believe to be a forgery.

History

On July 1, 2002. Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. (安田火災海上保険) and Nissan Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. (日産火災海上保険) merged into a new company, Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.
