Sonata for violin & piano No. 2

Classical Work: Sonata for violin & piano No. 2

Review

In Violin Sonata No. 2 (1927), Irwin Schulhoff gleefully shed his snakeskin of schmaltz. This trim and exhilarating piece employs a welter of new tricks, undoubtedly gleaned from Bela Bartok (whose violin sonatas appeared five years earlier): stunning pizzicatos, strategic dissonance, otherworldly fades, and just enough high-register violin passages to give it a raw edge. ~ Peter Bates, All Music Guide
