Songs from the City

Album Review: Songs from the City

Review

Here's two versions of the splendid Sudanese sound, the most Arabic of all the Afro-Islamic idioms. Salim is backed by oud, percussion, and the small portable harmonium so popular in India. Mubarak substitutes an accordion for the harmonium. Salim is the more consciously traditional in feel, Mubarak the more powerful. But neither album is to be missed (though it would be nice if somebody recorded Mubarak with his usual, larger and more syncretic, band). ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, All Music Guide
