All too often, musicians who like to call themselves "multi-faceted" aren't really as multi-faceted as they would like you to believe; they might be very good in one area and inadequate in another. But Scott G., also known as the G-Man, really is multi-faceted; he knows how to wear a variety of hats equally well, and that flexibility is evident on his fourth album, Sonic Tonic -- which underscores his talents as a singer and a composer as well as a musician/guitarist and producer. On this 2005 release, the Los Angeles resident compartmentalizes; six of the 14 tracks are trance-oriented, and the other eight are pop/rock items underscoring his appreciation of artists like David Bowie, Thomas Dolby, Gary Numan, and Roxy Music. The tracks the G-Man identifies as trance are very club-oriented, while the pop/rock songs show how talented a lyricist he is. This is a CD that exists in both a club/dance world and a pop/songcraft world -- and for the G-Man, one does not rule out the other. Everything on Sonic Tonic is club-friendly to some degree -- it's just that the trance-oriented material is overtly club-oriented while the pop/rock tunes have club appeal but are also well-crafted pop/rock songs that you can simply sit down and listen to. And anyone who appreciated the clever and quirky lyrics that the G-Man brought to Grin Groove and Electro Bop won't be disappointed by "As If," "And She Waits," or "You Are Invited" -- these songs remind you that the G-Man, for all his Euro-dance polish, definitely has a way with a lyric. The Angelino still has his moments of self-indulgence, but that isn't a major problem -- and all things considered, Sonic Tonic is a memorable addition to his catalog. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
