US Military Dictionary: Sons of Liberty

A New York militia group created during the tax revolts of the North American colonists to intimidate British tax collectors. By organizing local militia, the colonists hoped to obviate the need for British troops, thereby eliminating the Crown's justification for the odious taxes.
