Raincoat

Sou'westers were originally of oilcloth but may also be made of rubberized fabric or vinyl bonded to fabric.

Hat

The sou'wester hat is worn to repel water, and is usually made of a flexible waterproof material such as plastic or oilcloth; it often has a neckstrap to keep it from flying off in strong winds. It was traditionally worn by sailors off the North Atlantic coasts of Europe, the U.S. and Canada, and is distinguished by a wide brim that is especially long in the back for the purpose of protecting the neck from the elements.

The Online etymology dictionary states "The nautical coat called a sou'wester (1836) protects the wearer against severe weather, such as a gale out of the southwest".[2]

The traditional North American firefighter helmet, which also sports a wide brim and a long tail covering the back of the neck, can be seen as a hard version of a sou'wester.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada the hat may also be called a "Cape Ann," a name inspired by Cape Ann, Mass, USA. [3]
